Leroy, Aperçu & Raisonné

This update includes a new font family of 2 cuts named Leroy designed by Oscar amp; Ewan, as well as 2 new products in the form of posters.

Leroy is based on a technical drawing found in a 60's model car magazine. The type was drawn with a lettering set, a system used around that time to letter maps and other precision drawings. It was presumably similar to Keuffel amp; Esser's Leroy set, hence the name.

You can view and buy Leroy here.

To mark the update of Aperçu Pro, an A1 silkscreen has been produced in a limited edition of 50. As well, a specimen for Raisonné which is available five fluorescent colours.

Aperçu Pro

Since its release in August 2010, Aperçu quickly found its position in the market, being used across a variety of different media and sectors around the world in both print and web. It has been utilized by institutions such as MOMA, De Wiels, Zeit Magazine and the Walker Art Center.

Our initial aim at its inception, was to make a typeface for a variety of projects and uses, we feel has been fulfilled. With its balance of realist characteristics based on classic realist typefaces such as Johnston, Gill Sans, Neuzeit and Franklin Gothic, and its ability to sit well in running text at a variety of sizes, it has proven itself to be a usable typeface for both others and ourselves. After its release we have continued to use Aperçu in our studio practice. A year later and it seemed a fitting point to look at extending its support for Central Eastern European and Cyrillic-based languages. Now with more than 530 characters per weight, Aperçu Pro arrives. A printed supplement is also scheduled for release in the coming weeks.

If you have already purchased Aperçu you can upgrade here by entering your unique Transaction ID and following the instructions.

View Aperçu in Cyrillic here.

PDU Release

Initiated as a project at Werkplaats Typographie, Dries Wieuwaters began exploring a stencil based system originally designed by Joseph A. David. In 1876 David acquired the patent for a system that he had invented for sign-writers. With a universal stencil, all UPPERCASE, lowercase, numbers, punctuation, accents etc could be sourced from the grid of the stencil. Dries used this stencil or Plaque Découpée Universelle (PDU) and began an exploration into the liberties and restrictions of a unified grid. We are happy to now present this new release.

The font itself has 2 cuts, regular (a filled version of the stencil), and outline (this cut staying true to the hand rendering via the stencil). Alongside these cuts are corresponding pattern cuts in outline and regular. Boasting a glyph count of 1578 for each cut of PDU, alongside 229 glyphs included inthe patterns. The corresponding pattern is provided free with the purchased with the regular and outline cuts of PDU.

Alongside this font release, a reproduction of the stencil itself in thin sheet metal, and a corresponding 12-page newspaper designed by Dries Wieuwaters, with an essay documenting and explaining the process of the exploration and reproduction is available via the products page.

Two years after creating the original identity and typeface for the Made in Birmingham exhibition, we created a more refined, commercial version of the typeface, Central Avenue.

After working with this typeface almost exclusively in black and white, we felt that it would be more interesting to explore it in colour for the type specimen. The unbound booklet also works as a series of 4 posters — abstract and bright.

Central Avenue is a new display typeface designed by StudioMakgill. We have built it to take full advantage of the Opentype superscript feature. From this you can create a multitude of word logos from with in the typeface itself.

Originally created for the graphic identity of an exhibition celebrating Birmingham's infamous 1886 exhibition of Local Manufacturers and Natural History, the typeface is based on the signage from the original show. It has been designed to retain some of the awkwardness and personality that the hand painted letter forms have.

Raisonné

We are happy to announce the release of Raisonné. Raisonné is a contemporary sans-serif typeface, designed by Benjamin Critton over the course of several months during the summer of 2010. Its single weight—demibold—was drawn for use at all scales. Raisonné was initially conceived as a typeface that would comprise the written portions of of a comprehensive catalogue raisonné, the creation and publishing of which is required of each MFA candidate in the Department of Graphic Design at the Yale School of Art.

The typeface is parodic-serious, intended to be a bit dumb, blunt, candid, affable—honest in the same way Modernism liked its materials. It pays homage here and there to noteworthy precedents, among them Rudolf Koch's Kabel, Sol Hess' Twentieth Century, Joseph Churchward's Crossbred, and Herb Lubalin's Avant Garde.

Raisonné is published with a full set of upper amp; lowercase letterforms, as well as a full latin character set and several stylistic alternates; it is distributed in OpenType format.
